StS Episode 22: Time Travel and Bubonicon

Pascual Romero: So today we are going to be talking about time travel. Later in this segment we’re going to be over at Bubonicon.

CW: And Ben’s gonna be preparing for his talk, but we’re gonna be running around talking to people about time travel.

PR: Yeah, we’re just gonna be nerding out and just warping all over that place, just talking about one of my personal favorite topics in science fiction.

I know Ben’s not really a huge time travel fan.

BR: Not really, not really. I remember that on your Facebook page you were going apeshit over Back to the Future.

PR: Yeah, it’s my favorite time travel trilogy, which is not at all scientifically, well, time travel isn’t really scientifically sound, but yes, I will admit, it’s about one of the most like basic hokey-est premises.

BR: That was my first clue. It’s like something’s wrong with… no, let me rephrase that. Something’s odd about Pascual. He’s just… and of course there’s Back to the Future stuff, I mean, right behind us on the wall.

PR: Yeah, those are original frames from one of the original prints, theater prints of the film. And those are Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd’s autographs there. So, yes, I am a big fan.

CW: And as you already know, I’ve seen every episode of Doctor Who since the reboot, or the latest incarnation. And so, I have my certain penchant for time travel and paradoxes and use as a fictional trope and all sorts of stuff. And I think there is a skeptical angle we can look at in a couple of ways here. And if Ben doesn’t want to play, then Ben doesn’t have to play.

BR: I will admit to being outnerded here. I like a couple time travel films, I’ll be totally honest with you, I often find them to be sort of a cheat. You know, like, oh, well, oh, that happened, we’ll just go back and fix it.

CW: It absolutely is a cheat.

BR: But again, you know, you guys run with it. I’ll be talking about UFO conspiracies.

CW: Well, I guess first we should address whether or not the scientific community believes time travel is an actual possibility.

PR: Yeah, that’s…

CW: And the jury is very much out. There’s string theory possibilities, there’s a fellow named Kurt Gödel, who is a physicist and friend of Einstein’s. He came up with a solution to some field equations and let me quote out of here, “because of the homogeneity of the space-time and the mutual twisting of our family of time-like geodesics”, whatever those are, “it is more or less inevitable that the Godel space-time should have closed time-like curves”. And I saw some pictures of this I am NOT a physicist I do not understand what this stuff means I don’t even have the background and even physicists I do own the book the physics of Star Trek by Lawrence Krauss and you know Star Trek’s got a fair amount of different types of time travel sure sure and he’s got an illustration in here talking about bending space and creating wormholes and he’s got sort of like a little Mobius strip of space-time curve with an A to B wormhole.

And what he’s positing is if you have a wormhole with one end that’s moving really fast or you know swimming around like I know if you’ve ever taken like a tube like a flexible tube and swung it around your head so it makes that weird whirligig sound. If you got a wormhole doing that because of the way time is affected at different speeds, I’ll quote from the book here, “because the bottom mouth of the wormhole will be moving with respect to the space in which it is situated, while the top mouth will not, special relativity tells us that clocks will tick at different rates for each mouth, which means that after time has passed, you’re going to end up with one end of the wormhole at one time continuum and the other at a different time”. Hypothetically.

Theoretically, time travel is based on a lot of the stuff I’ve read from physicists and scientific aspects of time travel is based on the same little escape route that skeptics hate seeing for other alternate medicine and alternate premises. Like, okay, homeopathy could work. And why could it work? Well, because scientists don’t know everything and science has been wrong before. And I’m literally reading when I’m going through looking at some research stuff for this, I’m like, yeah, a lot of the physicists themselves are like, well, we thought it would be impossible for a black hole to exist.

But then we found out that black holes do exist. So there’s a lot of weird.

BR: By the same token, we thought it was impossible that dragons exist, and… still no dragons. Did the book, The Physics of Star Trek, when it was showing you that diagram, did it mention how many angels can fit through there?

CW: Can we just lock Ben in a closet for a while, and we’ll just go to Bubonica?

PR: You know, that model for time travel reminds me, there’s one of my favorite sci-fi horror movies is a movie called Event Horizon and it’s a basically a haunted house in space and the whole description he’s talking about when Sam Neill’s character is describing how the how the ship it can you know the idea was it could jump through space time and that’s how they could do long-distance travel in the ship and he was like saying the fold space time in half and then you pass through it in a wormhole basically and you create the wormhole with a black hole that sits on the ship.

CW: Origami travel!

PR: Yeah, and that actual, they actually used that theory to kind of propose how the ship did it. Now, it ended up having a very Lovecraftian kind of personal psychological hell twist to it. I don’t want to give it away. It’s actually a really cool movie. But that reminded me that movies do try to incorporate some of that. And in a lot of cases, that’s why I think as a theme, time travel on one hand can be sort of a deus ex machina where it just sort of sweeps in and saves the day. But on the other hand, when it’s done real clever, they use it as a way to create harder challenges to overcome.

CW: It can be the savior and it can be the problem. Because there’s a, I mean in the Star Trek book he points out that all the time travel that happens in Star Trek, because Star Trek is perfectly written and has perfect continuity. No, I’m kidding, I wish that were so. But most of the time travel that happens in there is connected to some sort of huge release of energy. Some huge, you know, warp core breaches breaching at the same time or they have to slingshot around a black hole or really close to the sun and just get all this momentum and all this energy.

The writers are at least acknowledging, look, we have to get into some amounts of force and pressure and energy that’s completely unheard of, like big bang type levels of crap to even think about this being possible and then it’s going to be not as controlled as you think it is. So, yeah, in fact, I found, I kind of figured out, well, I didn’t figure out, it’s not like I’m no expert, but did it seem to you that there’s like two different types of time travel that stories rely on? It’s either the completely controlled, like Bill and Ted and their phone booth, the TARDIS, H.G. Wells’ time machine.

It’s like I have a device that has control, I just punch in the numbers, I get to 88 miles an hour and and and off we go to a place that I have dialed in and we’re gonna hit the target. And then you have the other kind which I find more compelling the completely uncontrolled. Oh crap. I’ve just been thrown someplace I didn’t mean to go. Yeah, I have no idea how I got here Quantum Leap, Sliders It’s like it’s like chutes and ladders where it’s just you’re blindfolded and you just end up on the other side of a wormhole and you don’t know how. Time Traveler’s Wife, in fact, the time traveler’s wife, apparently the guy had a quote unquote a paranormal genetic defect that caused him to blip through time throughout his life.

It was like having a seizure. So there’s been so many different ways that time travel has been exploring.

PR: Old man’s asleep. Old man Radford fell asleep.

BR: What are we doing?

CW: We just flipped you ahead in time past my whole nerdy statement about time travel.

BR: Oh yeah, that’s great.

PR: Interstellar actually kind of had that angle to it also where Matthew McConaughey’s character goes into a different, not necessarily dimension, but a different space-time, and the rest of his his earth life went on without him and he comes back much later and this is described as I’m not giving anything away because this is described very early in the film that when he goes out there every Minute he’s there is like seven years.

CW: Yeah that one planet that was super close to a black hole There’s a lot of back-and-forth with physicists about that Neil deGrasse Tyson pointed out something’s wrong and then some other physicist swooped in and said, no, well, if it was a rotating black hole…

Phil Plait was just talking about this at the Star Trek convention that I worked… Oh, I’m sorry, I’m really outnumbered here. I worked at the Star Trek convention like last month, actually it was earlier this month, and Phil Plait was talking about how he had kind of smacked himself in the forehead when he realized, oh, it was a rotating black hole! Well, yeah, that would work then! But, yeah, the time distortion and like just they went to the planet, they were only going to be there for like two minutes, and they spent 10 minutes there, and they went back and their shipmate was like 20 years older.

That was some scary stuff. I find that very compelling and scary when you’re thinking about space travel.

BR: But is that time travel?

CW: See there’s the question. Is it time travel? If you’re in a coma, is that time travel? Is it time travel in one direction?

BR: When you’re sleeping, is that time travel? Come on.

CW: I don’t know. You were the one just to sleep. You tell us.

PR: Well, I think that’s the thing about time travel is kind of one of the misconceptions about the way it works in fiction is that it’s somehow like outside of what theories of time travel we have and the thing about time travel as described like if you go by the the kind of relativistic time travel where if you go fast enough you can look back on yourself leaving that point and and the reality is that like in each time time is still passing exactly at the same speed so time travel really isn’t that you don’t travel through time you just end up in a different dimension of time.

And so in reality, there’s no real, and again, it’s all so highly hypothetical that there’s almost no way to base it on anything other than other people’s theories, which again, gives it a lot of flexibility in terms of storytelling, but in order to tell the story well and in an entertaining fashion, you kind of have to create paradoxes and make it a problem.

Time travel, I’ve never seen a movie or a TV show where time travel was like always, you know to the benefit of everyone.

CW: I View it as sort of similar to watching things that involve heaven or hell or an afterlife, right? Yeah, it’s like I don’t ascribe to that is like a reality that can happen, but you can’t really disprove it, and if I’m gonna suspend my disbelief and watch a movie, I mean…

BR: It could be an entertaining premise.

CW: Yeah, I mean Bill and Ted went back and like, you know, had interactions with Hitler. It’s another way to bring in like a historical characters too.

You can bring in a historical character by having time travel or in that seminal wonderful film Little Nikki, you can watch Harvey Keitel shove a pineapple up Hitler’s ass in hell every day because you can bring these people to life through the trope of either an afterlife or heaven and hell or time travel.

PR: You’re going to have Genghis Khan totally trash the Oshman sporting goods in San Dimas, California. So in another kind of real-world time travel theory slash conspiracy slash who knows what is involving the Large Hadron Collider.

CW: Oh yeah, the Large Hadron Collider. I remember reading a lot about what people were thinking might be happening there.

PR: Yeah, they were talking about where the collider itself was manipulating space-time to prevent itself from creating…

CW: It was breaking down.

PR: Yeah, it was breaking down to prevent paradoxes or the collapse of the universe.

CW: Yeah, like some unfathomable disaster would occur if the Large Hadron Collider actually worked and we found the Higgs boson or the god particle as some people were calling it. And so, yeah, so it made sense for people to actually postulate, not scientists, mind you, not scientists.

PR: Yeah, no, just people.

CW: But other people, perhaps with tin foil on their heads, to say the machine was time traveling and forcing itself to shut down.

PR: Yeah, yeah. And Vanderbilt University, I think it was, there was someone there, I looked it up, a Professor Thomas Weiler, he was saying that it could be the first machine capable of causing matter to travel backwards in time. He’s a physics professor. He said it’s because it’s one of the only things that he’s ever seen that doesn’t violate the laws of physics or the experimental constraints. So basically I’m just going to sort of…

CW: It doesn’t violate the physical laws?

PR: No, it’s because of it being a very special particle.

So what he said was, well, I’ll kind of give you a quick overview. One of the major goals of the collider was to find the Higgs boson, the particle that physics invoked to explain why particles like protons, neutrons, and electrons have mass. Now this is like, you know, way out of my league science, which I won’t even pretend to understand, but they say, you know, that they were predicting that if they found it, it would create a second particle called the Higgs singlet at the same time. Now, he said these singlets should have the ability to jump into an extra fifth dimension where they can either move forward or backward in time and reappear in the future or past. Now, he’s saying that, quoting him, he said, “One of the attractive things about this approach to time travel is that it avoids all the big paradoxes because time travel is limited to these special particles, it is not possible for a man to travel back in time and murder one of his parents before he himself is born, for example”.

CW: Unless he was composed entirely of those particles.

PR: Exactly. So he said, however, if they could control the production of Higgs singlets, they might be able to send messages to the past or future.

CW: Oh, like Morse code.

PR: Yeah, so basically, so now keep in mind, this is not even theoretical at this point, this is highly hypothetical.

CW: So you can send like a text message like to your dad in like 1982 saying, invest in Microsoft.

PR: Yeah, so it’s kind of, yeah, it’s really weird and you know I don’t know exactly how he proposes this would actually like be materialized or how you would actually send it back and observe it.

But at this point, he’s just saying that these little singlets exist kind of outside of our known space-time. Like they can just pop in and out of existence. And that’s kind of what he’s saying is just the fact that this little thing comes from seemingly out of nowhere, it gives you a little bit of evidence that it is extra-dimensional in some sense. And so it sits kind of outside of space-time.

CW: I find that fascinating and scary at the same time.

PR: It’s frightening. I kind of imagine that we’re just like, maybe we’re just pulling this little particle from some parallel universe, and we keep doing this.

CW: The multiverse.

PR: Slowly but surely we just dismantle reality somewhere else.

CW: Oh no, I shouldn’t have pulled that thread. Well, that brings up a whole different type of time travel, the time travel where it’s not a person traveling, it’s messages. Wasn’t there a movie with, it was like a romance movie where there’s a magical mailbox and it was like a, I want to say Sandra Bullock was in it, but I don’t remember. The Lake House or something, where she’d get a letter from the past and then she’d write back and she was having this love affair via letters, but it was from a guy who died a hundred years ago.

PR: Yeah, yeah. That’s actually kind of an interesting premise too because you know then you kind of stroll into maybe a little more you know, I hate to, I’m hesitant to say reality-based but a little more feasible you know because the problem with time travel is as we know it in stuff like Quantum Leap and Sliders and Back to the Future and Doctor Who is that you’re physically taking objects to and from different space times. Star Trek, they deal with it a lot in terms of gravitational time travel and black holes.

CW: It’s a whole ship or at least a whole person.

PR: But in reality, what this guy at Vanderbilt is saying is maybe by using the particles you can transmit you know an idea or a message –

CW: Well, I’m Highly extrapolating, but you could you could have a love affair in Morse code yeah with binary communication using Singlets it would not seem so romantic. I doubt you could I doubt Sandra Bullock could pull that off, but but yeah, that’s I mean any any form of time travel would be revolutionary if we found evidence of it. Even if it was just a quantum little tiny packet of energy that was found to definitely be time traveling.

PR: And I think that we kind of, I don’t know, we all have kind of our favorite time travel tropes and I say Back to the Future is my favorite.

There’s a lot of nostalgia tied into that. And also I think there’s some really clever paradoxes in it, like about how him kind of screwing up his mother and father meeting slowly dissolved him from existence. You know, little stuff like that and how it predicted Trump 2015 kind of.

CW: Oh, let’s not even go down that rabbit hole. Oh my god. He’s biffed.

PR: But but but then you know in my world. I actually think that the Terminator movies get it the most correct.

CW: Oh, they were good Yeah, because the the whole premise with Terminator is like no matter what you do, no matter how many things you send back in time you it still happens one way or the other like you can only shift what happens in the moment, but you can never shift what ultimately happens.

And I always thought that was fascinating. It makes it a little depressing, but by Terminator 2, Sarah Connor had already, she believed all this wholesale, but was like, she was kind of determined to stop it. But then by the end of it, even having stopped the T-1000, there was still all this uncertainty about Skynet, and just because they blew up the building, and just because they got rid of the T-1000. I hope if you’re listening to this, you’ve seen this movie by now, but.

CW: There’s this movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger called The Terminator, and yeah.

PR: And it peaked at part two, but. But as the series went on, and I’ll say, I’ve seen them all, and I think that there were still some really, like, they kept hammering home the idea that no matter what they did, time was just a relentless, unstopping force. The timeline cannot be changed. It can be altered in the moment, but it can never be, you know, the ultimate events that happen on a global scale never are stopped.

CW: It brings up concepts of fate and meant to be, which are very unskeptical, but with certain timelines.

I find it a very fascinating mental exercise. One of the things that Star Trek brings to mind is the transporter question. And they’ve covered this on SGU a few times, where if there is a machine that could vaporize you atom per atom and have you reappear a mile from here using different atoms and different everything, but your brain would be reconstructed exactly as it is with the same memories, you would be the same construction of atoms, but once you step into that machine here, you vaporize here.

That Pascual is gone, and this new pascual pops up. Here’s the question, would you do it, or would you consider that dying? Because really, you would be dying, you’d be dead, but then another pascual would pop up, but would you feel like you just popped over there? Well, that pascual would feel that way. So would time travel the same thing?

Well, if you change the timeline, do you even know? You don’t remember the other thing that could have been? Are you still you? And, you know, anything that deals with, like, your self-identity, it’s fascinating. There’s fascinating aspects of fiction and literature you can get into when you bring in weirdnesses like that.

PR: I think that’s, you know, to jump back into Back to the Future, as much as we brush it off as being a little silly, Dr. Emmett Brown does actually make some really interesting observations when he’s talking about the paradox which is caused in the first one, well, everything in the series is caused by the first time travel, but because, you know, remember the movie, first movie started out with no intention of sending a person to 1955. That was entirely by accident. He had punched in that date just to show an example of how it worked.

And he’s like, oh, that was the day the clock tower, or no, the day he fell off the toilet and bumped his head and discovered the flux or theorized the flux capacitor. And he types it in being nostalgic and then the Libyans show up and then Marty gets in the in the time machine and takes off and ends up in 1955 guys so everything is this whole story is set off by an accident when they’re doing an experiment with Einstein the dog, but what happens is you know doc of course having discovered or realized what the flux capacitor was the day that Marty shows up in 1955, he starts realizing the paradoxes very quickly. And so he draws a chart where he shows, here’s you landing here, and then he’s like, this is where the entire universe basically diverges onto a different timeline.

And so really, Back to the Future exists in kind of a multiverse, and where the Biff timeline, the 50s, you know, Marty not existing timeline, the Marty’s mom ending up, you know, not going for George McFly. And these all end up being established timelines that are in their own universe that still just happen on their own. So kind of the sad thing about it is there is one where, you know, Doc gets shot in the back in 1885. There is a timeline where Biff stays Biff Tannen, the casino magnet, and there’s you know every timeline never actually disappears, just Marty finds his way back into his original one, which you know is…

CW:And if you want a much darker look at that, watch Rick and Morty. Which was of course based on Back to the Future.

They’ve got the Doc prototype and the Marty prototype. Morty, not Marty. And yeah, and oh, I gotta say I love that show. Just the complete careless abandon of like, yeah, whatever, I got infinite daughters.

PR: Well, and I love that one because the paradox is like, that is such a bulletproof premise.

Because like, they’re like, yeah, it’s ridiculous. There’s an infinite number of Ricks and Mortys and an infinite number of universes and every time something really that just clashes with reality happens, it’s just explainable by the fact that infinite possibilities exist when you’re running around the universe with this thing zapping holes in time, space-time. And the craziest part is the Rick and Morty that you’re looking at in every episode, it ends up not even being the same ones, you know, throughout the season. You know, like Morty dies off and it’s a different Morty. It’s almost got like a little slight Doctor Who, you know, touch to it too.

CW: It’s so dark, but it’s a fun sort of dark. You go along with Rika, and you’ve got to be a person that’s fairly aware. You can’t just watch this show and get as much out of it if you were like 14 and had never read anything about it. You didn’t know Back to the Future. You didn’t know other time travel. You’ve gotta be kind of well-versed in other cultural aspects of time travel.

Zod: I am my favorite time traveler. I’m not surprised. Because time is a linear concept and we’re moving directionally in discrete units throughout time, therefore we are all traveling throughout time. And I am General Zod, therefore I am my favorite time traveler.

CW: And he does not have a name he’s just the time traveler.
